Assuming you can refrain from smashing it to pieces in the morning

Coffee is a beverage that many, many people indulge in every day, and for which exist a whole bunch of means to brew. There are coffee machines even. Now, though, we bring you the first ever alarm clock that also doubles as a coffee maker.

Granted, we can't be absolutely sure that this is the first ever alarm clock – coffee maker hybrid device in the whole wide world. It is the first one we cover here though.

Invented by a designer named Josh Renouf, the clock is called the Barisieur and can look pretty elegant if you have a dark wood end-table or counter next to your bed's headboard.

Indeed, it is colored almost identical to coffee seeds, at least at the top, where the laboratory-like coffee maker is located.

How does it work? The alarm clock is the easy part, an electronic chronometer that will ring when the time strikes whatever hour you previously set for it.

The coffee maker half is a bit more sophisticated though. It uses induction heating to boil water, enabled by stainless steel ball bearings.

The coffee (it has to be ground) is stored in a small drawer compartment, and there is a separate section for sugar. There is only enough for one cup, however, which means you will have to refill the drawer every evening.

This, however, is the whole point, according to UK-based industrial designer Josh Renouf. He said that the ritual would send signals to the body and mind that it was time to unwind.

Whether or not that actually works is debatable and probably dependent on each person. Still, even if the periodic preparations don't have the advertised effect, the smell of coffee in the morning should make your awakening at least a bit more gradual, less jarring. Pleasant even, if you like to buy a particularly aromatic brand.

At the very least, this means that coffee drinkers who are not morning people will be less inclined to smash their fist down upon the device. By extension, they will be less likely to shatter the glass and get themselves cut.

Unfortunately, if you want one of these Barisieur alarm clocks / coffee makers, you will need to pay between £150 and £250, or roughly $250 / €190 to $420 / €310. Sadly, there is no timeframe for the arrival of the product. Indeed, Renouf cannot totally guarantee that he will bring the Barisieur to market all the way, since he is still perfecting the prototype. The Josh Renouf Design website will offer updates.
