The Adafruit learning platform may gain quite a few new followers

Skateboarding is the favorite sport of many people, and a fair few of them do it through video games if they can;t master the sport themselves. Now, the Adafruit learning platform offers everyone the chance to make a really fancy longboard.

The new project describes how you can go about customizing a skateboard with various lights and other visual embellishments. Called Trinket NeoPixel LED Longboard, it only needs you to own a standard longboard and a 3D printer with a build volume of 100 x 100 x 100 mm / 3.93 x 3.93 x 3.93 inches.

Pretty much all consumer 3D printers have a larger build volume than that, so it's really not a worry.

As for the 3D printing models, they can be downloaded from Thingiverse or Autodesk’s 123D Design platform for free.

So what is the NeoPixel LED Longboard? Why, a skateboard that, thanks to Arduino electronics and NeoPixel LED strips, produces a scintillating, moving light effect.

You do need to have some knowledge about electronics though if you want to make this thing. Or a really high determination to learn as you go (and, possibly, money to repair ruined components). It would do great as a science project if nothing else.
