The world can rejoice now that the mobile PC market has seen the rise of a new ultraportable, namely the so-called ThinkPad Edge 11 that Lenovo has put together and essentially a machine that can use either an AMD or Intel platform.

Even though the various laptops on the market can usually be classified in certain categories, like netbooks, notebooks, mobile workstations etc., the distinction is not always obvious.

The Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 11 seems to be one of the devices that proves this fact, being a sort of combinations between a netbook and an ultraportable.

The newcomer comes more or less close to the performance capabilities of a netbook, but does not use the Pine Trail platform from Intel, nor does it have the screen size that most netbooks have.

The newcomer has a display of 11.6 inches and a configuration that can be centered around either an Intel processor (Pentium or Core) or an AMD Athlon Series central processing unit.

The press release does not specifically point out every detail regarding the specifications, but does mention WiFi, a 4-in-1 card reader and optional 3G or 4G/WiMAX.

DDR3 memory and discrete graphics, in the case of the chips without integrated solutions at least, are also more than likely.

"Just like large businesses, small business customers want laptops that perform without skimping on features that at the same time, fit their unique style and come at the right price," said Dilip Bhatia, vice president, ThinkPad Marketing, Lenovo.

"That's why we've created the ThinkPad Edge 11-inch laptop with the latest processors for multitasking, 3G and WiMax for anywhere connectivity and included extra business-focused features like a standard low light sensitive webcamera," Bhatia added.

All the hardware is crammed inside a frame of 1.1 inches in thickness and are managed by the Microsoft Windows 7 operating system.

Set to sell in three color versions, Midnight Black Glossy, Midnight Black Smooth and Heatwave Red Glossy that is, the Lenovo ThinkPad Edge will reach small-to-medium business consumers for $499. Its battery life is of up to seven hours.
