And to always stand straight

It has often been said that a straight back can be the one thing that makes the difference between an elegant, sophisticated woman and one that you hardly notice when you pass by her on the street. It’s not so much the clothes that make the woman or her style, as her attitude when she’s wearing them, and this is why the fashion industry – and not only – is placing so much emphasis on posture and a straight back. Below are some tips on how to always keep a check on our posture.

Aside from the several exercises we can perform to get a straight back, especially if we’re stuck at a desk job, there are also a few steps we can take to make sure we’re always standing tall - literally. First things first, we must always keep a check on our body, no matter how stressed or tired we might feel. To make sure that we never hunch without even being aware of it, trainers advise us to use mirrors and windows as posture checkpoints.

Of course, looking in any reflective surface is something that any woman does either way. The catch is, however, to look at whether we’re keeping our back straight or not, and forget about the shoes or the outfit for once, as well as about “How does my hair look”-type of questions.

If corrections to the posture need to be made, trainers tell us, we should make them on the spot. Since the option of stretching is not available (if we’re on the street), the best way to Arch our back and keep it straight is to take a deep breath, while pushing our shoulders backwards a bit. The posture we get when we fill our lungs with air is the one we should strive to maintain for as long as possible, and at least until we reach the next checkpoint.

Another tip to keeping a straight back comes, this time, from fashion insiders. High heels have been blamed repeatedly for spine-related issues, but it’s often overlooked that they can also contribute to a wonderful posture. Heels force any woman to stand straight, which is why stylists tell us we should all give them a try. Of course, no one expects us to run to work in 10cm pumps, but a decently-sized heel can do wonders for our posture, it has been said.
