As more and more digital technology penetrates in the field of audiophile equipment, it was a matter of time until a name like the worldwide-respected Thiel entered the boldly emerging new market of high-complexity integrated audio gear. The new solution is called ThielNet and is in fact an IP-based loudspeaker management system, suitable for large residences where multi-zone audio is a must.[admark=1]

ThielNet is centered around an IP-addressable audio distribution processor connected to IP-based active loudspeakers and also coming with an IP- adapter for third-party loudspeakers and an IP-based configuration software which will make everything simple and professional. This new solution has been developed via a strong partnership with Bicom, activating in the field of IP-based telecom and having exceptional results in VOIP systems implementation with NEC and Samsung.

As specced by the manufacturer, ThielNet can drive up to eight distinct zones each with 8 speakers; so far such a large configuration has not been tested, though. The dB1 is the codename for the interface allowing the connection between ThielNet and the homeowner's Ethernet network; it will also allow for online applications such as firmware upgrades and so on. The dS1 module contains the digital 250W amplifier and crossover and will be embedded in Thiel's new line of IP-based speakers; it can also be attached to third-party speakers.

One of the great advantages brought in by the ThielNet is the fact that the signal is kept on a digital level from the source to the very voice coil inside the loudspeakers, therefore no signal loss will affect the listening; even more, no endless cable runs will wreck your d?cor or put you to additional expenses to hide them away.

The first two Thiel speakers to be upgraded to ThielNet compatibility are the SCS4D bookshelves and the SS1D subwoofer, derived from the acclaimed SCS4 and SS1 units. Future brings "plans to include practically all Thiel models in the future" said Gary Dayton, technical support manager at Thiel. Additionally, the Streamer software is easy to work with and as claimed by Thiel, any homeowner should be able to have it running in great conditions with minimal fuss.

No prices have been announced yet, but stay tuned for the CES2008 demonstration of a 5.1 ThielNet home theater solution.
