The Eidos Montreal development studio has just turned two years old and put out a new banner add, pictured next to this article, which promises that the second project it is working on will soon be unveiled to the public.

Of course, the announcement has set off a storm or rumors, most of them centered around Thief 4. And the gaming world seems to be in agreement that this is indeed the videogame which Eidos Montreal is working on.

Eidos Montreal is a weird outfit. Soon after it was founded, it announced, in November 2007, that it was working on Deus Ex 3, one of the most expected sequels in the history of videogaming. It was set to be a prequel and to bring back the most important elements of the first game, with upgrades, stealth, multiple routes to objectives and a story that involved twists and multiple secret organizations.

Then, in April 2008, Eidos Montreal made gaming news again by announcing that it was starting work on another AAA project, bearing a name that began with the letter “T.” Of course, everyone thought of a sequel to the Thief series, which was initially created by Looking Glass Studios and then by Ion Storm, both of which are now defunct.

Apparently, the Thief rumor is gaining more traction now because the font used in the new banner is eerily similar to that used in the Thief games. Unfortunately, Eidos Montreal is not saying when it presents this new game project to the public, so the wait could be long for the fans of the Thief series.

Recently, Eidos was taken over by Square Enix, the Japanese developer and publisher. Interestingly, the statement released referred to Thief as being amongst “the world's leading video game properties,” which gives even more credibility of Thief 4 being in production.
