Microsoft adds new effect to live tiles in Windows 10

As we told you yesterday, new builds of Windows 10 come with new live tile effects that can be spotted in both the Start menu and the Start screen.

The leaked Windows 10 build 10074 that reached the web earlier today comes with this new feature, but just as expected, it’s still in its early days and several improvements still need to be made.

As you can see in the GIF below, the Weather app is one of the few that actually come with a 3D effect for the live tile, along with News and Sports. The 3D animation is available for any live tile size, so it doesn’t matter if you’re using the wide or the small tile because the same effect is there for you.

More options could be developed

Right now, there’s no option to enable or disable this effect in Windows 10 and it only shows up at random times, so you might have to stare a little bit at the Start menu or the Start screen to see it happening.

We believe that Microsoft might be working on more effects for Windows 10’s live tile and give users the possibility of picking one for their computers, but this remains to be seen in future versions of the technical preview.

The easiest way to see the new animation in action is to turn the live tile off and back on, so it automatically refreshes using the 3D effect.

Obviously, certain refinements are still needed because the Weather tile, for instance, comes with a few design glitches that can be spotted at the bottom of graphic, but since they’re only now being developed, future versions should look a lot better.

In the meantime, everyone can give them a try in Windows 10 build 10074 and expect Microsoft to share more information on live tiles later today, at the opening keynote at BUILD 2015.
