Mass production of those displays from IFA, or some of them, will start by early October

4K2K HDTVs have been promoted for months, but they haven't actually been available for consumers to buy. They aren't really in mass production in fact.

This will soon change, though. According to Digitimes, Taiwan-based Chimei Innolux (CMI) will start mass-producing UD panels by October (2012).

4K2K is a resolution with approximately 4,000 pixels horizontally. 3840 x 2160 (LG's 84-inch TV) is the one that has come up in press releases the most so far (doubles the pixel count, horizontally and vertically, of Full HD). The maximum is 4096 x 3072 (12.6 megapixels) though.

CMI is making 56-inch 4K2K panels for medical applications, but will make 50 and 65-inch screens as well.

TVs will appear soon as well, but the report doesn't mention 84-inch sizes, only 39, 50 and 58 inches.

Japan- and South Korea-based LCD TV vendors will be the main competition for CMI. For example, Sony (who, coincidentally, brought an 85-inch 4K TV to IFA 2012 too), will probably call on the services of the former.
