The SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface has already made its way into practically every type of storage solution, even despite not being natively supported by AMD and Intel chipsets. Still, instead of unveiling some new portable hard drive or SSD, or some flash drive or another capable of employing this standard, Techus decided to change the flavor a bit by releasing something a little different. To be more specific, the Taiwanese company brought forth and officially detailed the so-called D0204.

The D0204 is, essentially, a DAS. DAS stands for direct attached storage and is supposedly intended as an auxiliary storage solution. This particular model measures 86 x 55.3 x 132 mm and boasts two distinct 2.5-inch SATA drive bays. As such, the electronic can house two hard disk drives or solid-state drives and configure them in RAID 0, 1 and LARGE. Not only that, but the units are even hot swappable.

“With full USB 3.0 compatibility, the new D0204 brings incredible performance and data protection to a remarkably tiny and easy-to-use device,” said Florence Shih, Thecus Technology General Manager. “Offering impressive storage capacity in a small size, the D0204 is the ideal storage device for the user on the go.”

All in all, the Techus D0204 should be able to provide a capacity of up to 2TB. Normally, such a large space wouldn't be easy to take advantage of, since external solutions don't really works as fast as internal ones.

Fortunately, the USB 3.0 has a bandwidth of up to 5Gbps. Thus, transfers are completed much faster than otherwise possible. Of course, to ensure a wide usability, compatibility with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 ports is provided. Users can choose to acquire either the standard solution or the one featuring USB 3.0 HBA.
