As the blogosphere is buzzing with talk of what odds aliens have to take vampires in terms of movie releases for 2011, the first theatrical trailer for “I Am Number Four” has dropped. Apparently, the answer would be: pretty good.

The film, starring up-and-coming Alex Pettyfer and based on a series of novels by the same name, tells the story of a group of (apparently gorgeous) aliens that try to blend in with mortals lest they be killed by some unknown force.

As Timothy Olyphant’s character explains in the trailer, the aliens are killed in sequence, and Pettyfer is number four so his number is up – but he’s not about to take that sitting down.

Unlike the teaser that came out in September this year, the full theatrical trailer shows more of the plot, while also offering a few hints about the overall mood of the film.

Safe to say it’s “Twilight” meets “Transformers” meet any high school movie ever made, word online has it – but that’s not to say it won’t make for an excellent ride.

“After a teaser that was heavy on narration, quick cuts, and loud noises, the new trailer for DreamWorks’ upcoming teen sci-fi movie I Am Number Four slows down long enough to establish the movie’s mood a little bit,” EW writes.

“Alex Pettyfer is the handsome troubled boy with a secret (he’s an alien on the run from hunters), Glee‘s Dianna Agron is the pretty troubled girl who falls for him… so far, so Twilight,” the report also mentions.

“But then, when you least expect it, things start going Boom! Timothy Olyphant is on hand as the Giles to Pettyfer’s Buffy, playing the renegade teen’s mentor/protector,” EW adds.

Gawker is less enthusiastic about the trailer, even cracking a joke about how “I Am Number Four looks like number two” but it does give credit where credit is due: Pettyfer could pull off the action here part, and the movie could actually work for mid-winter, as a breather in between bigger, more polished releases.

“I Am Number Four” is out in theaters in February 2011. Below is the full theatrical trailer – watch it and judge for yourself.
