Comprised of four different features, the McAfee Falcon package is more user-oriented and will vary its security options according to the subscribers' preferences and necessities. This flexibility comes in response to the future offers of the competition: Microsoft's Windows OneCare and Symantec's Genesis, a one-size-fits-all kind of produces.

"Rather than try to force a one-size-fits-all service on all consumers, we have tailored four specific service packages for four different consumer profiles," said Marc Solomon, director of product management at McAfee.

Falcon will protect PCs against spam, viruses, spyware and other threats such as phishing scams and rootkits. Falcon's variety will also prevent data loss, offer support for optimizing PC performance and secure a wireless network.

The core of the four versions is McAfee VirusScan Plus, which includes only the basic features.

Next is McAfee PC Protection Plus, which adds features that let users back up data.

McAfee Internet Security Suite includes all the features of the low-end products and contains phishing and spam shields, parental controls and a feature that keeps track of credit card numbers that are transmitted to the Internet.

The last feature: McAfee Total Protection is the complete, high-end product, which is only vaguely distinguishable from the McAfee Internet Security Suite, but McAfee announced that future options will be included in this package.

Beta versions of McAfee Total Protection and McAfee VirusScan Plus will be made available this month; the final products will follow to the end of summer.
