AMD overtook market leader Intel becoming the leading supplier of processors for the USA retail personal computer market. In October 2005, 49.8% of the personal computers (desktops and notebooks combined) sold in the USA utilized AMD processors, allowing AMD to surpass Intel, which had a 48.5% market share.

AMD's success in the USA retail market cannot be ignored, but Intel is the first on the number one spot when it comes to all US consumer PC sales. Dell, the number one PC supplier in the US consumer market, uses only Intel processors.

The holiday shopping season will decide the winner. There are rumors that Wal-Mart will offer US$398 AMD based notebooks and desktop PCs. This makes us think that AMD is in a stronger position to compete with Intel than it has been in the past holiday seasons.

Data from CA (Current Analysis), the industry's benchmark for navigating in today's markets, reveals that AMD's share of unit sales in the US retail desktop space increased from 52.0% in September to 67.7% in October. Also AMD's share of unit sales in the US retail notebook space increased from 26.2% in September to 31.5% in October. Moreover, AMD's October revenue share of retail PC sales (40.1%) trails that of Intel (57.6%) because the average selling price of Intel PCs is higher than AMD PCs.
