The 1909 Honus Wagner card that holds the record for the world's priciest baseball card has been tampered with, its owner admits.

Bill Mastro, dubbed the “King of Memorabilia” for owning the $2.8 million (€2.14 million) card among others, has admitted to the crime and will be serving jail time.

Sun Times writes that Mastro has been sentenced to 30 months in jail over doctoring the ultra-rare cigarette card.

According to Huffington Post, Mastro admitted to trimming the edges of the card in order to increase its value. A federal judge dubbed it fraud and awarded him jail time. The guilty plea saved Mastro from a potential 20-year sentence.

During his time as head of Mastro Auctions, the collector was also accused of selling a lock of hair that he said belonged to Elvis, but didn't, and of trying to auction off a bogus Cincinnati Reds Stockings trophy.
