The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the next role-playing experience made by Polish studio CD Projekt Red, features a complex skill system that promotes tactical thinking and preparation before big battles, and players will have to make some tough choices about what skills they take into a fight and what they leave out.

The Witcher series has been around for some time now and the past two installments have delivered some complex role-playing experiences that didn't try to hold the players’ hands. Instead, the titles thrust players into combat and had plenty of rewarding mechanics, provided fans were willing to take the time to understand them.

CD Projekt Red is currently working on The Witcher 3, which is set to debut in May, and the studio offered quite a lot of gameplay details a few weeks ago, as part of a global hands-on demonstration.

Now, some more info is surfacing online, via the official forums, where users have gathered round some of the details that haven't been made public just yet.

Lots of skills are included in The Witcher 3

Among them are pieces of information concerning the skill system in The Witcher 3, which is going to include a huge amount of choices for players as they level up protagonist Geralt of Rivia, and maybe even for the second main character, Ciri.

There are five skill trees in The Witcher 3, each with five actual abilities and five tiers. Every skill has multiple levels to unlock, and it seems that Geralt won't be able to completely unlock every single skill.

Once you gain access to a skill, you must add it into the limited number of slots available to Geralt. This number increases as you level up, but you won't be able to fit everything inside it.

Activating skills drastically changes Geralt's fighting style, and skills from the same category, once enabled in succession, greatly increase their effect.

Besides the skills, players also have access to four mutagen slots, which also affect the abilities of the main character.

The main goal of the complex system is to entice players to swap around the skills and pick the best options before heading into battle.
