The Witcher 2 is currently in the last stages of development at CD Projekt Red, so a developer from the Polish studio decided to detail some of the new features in the combat system of the upcoming role-playing game.

The original Witcher title had some rather awkward gameplay, but impressed plenty of people, thus creating a very devoted fan base and prompting the studio behind it to start working on the new title.

We've already heard about how The Witcher 2 has a very long campaign and even longer side quests, but now, Tomasz Gop, senior producer at CD Projekt Red for The Witcher 2 has detailed the combat of the new title and how monsters will spawn in its virtual world.

According to Gop, the new combat system is much more advanced, using all-new systems and some borrowed from other projects, including The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf, a suspended console version of the first RPG.

"I think it's too general to say whether it will be easier or not. Because now we have combat system that is more advanced. I mean it took more time to design this system. Some features were taken from The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf. Some of them we took from previous projects."

"But it was only a small part, most features were created specifically for TW2. There was a lot of work and a lot of features. We have worked for few years, only on combat system alone."

"We want to be sure that on the easiest difficulty level the combat will be really easy, easy to learn. But if you are a hardcore player and if you want to learn all these advanced features, you have to play more then you did in The Witcher 1. So it's hard to become a master in combat."

Gop also detailed how the monster spawning system will work.

"You probably know that I mentioned earlier that there will be something like an ecosystem. If you are just killing monsters in a location and don't want to know how they behave and where they live, they will re-appear from time to time."

"But whenever you want to go on an adventure of finding out what they are, you will be able to find the nest of these monsters and after killing them all they will disappear forever."

In order to flesh out the combat, Gop also confirmed that the main hero, Geralt, would be able to use ranged weapons, not just swords or other such items.

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings arrives exclusively for the PC on May 17.
