For the week that ended on December 6, New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo Wii was the best selling title on the all-important Japanese market, while the home gaming console has been dragged up by the release of the videogame and is now also topping the hardware chart. It seems that the new features in the Mario-powered title, including the new Help element and the four-person multiplayer, were good enough to attract close to 1 million people to the new Nintendo blockbuster.

The Wii managed to sell 106,555 units in one week, which is better than it has done for quite a few months, and is on track to being the best sold console in Japan during the next month.

The PlayStation Portable from Sony got second place, also on the strength of videogame releases, selling 67,880 units, while the PlayStation 3 is in third place with 57,782 consoles sold in one week. The DSi LL is continuing to post good numbers after a superb first week, moving 53,791 handhelds, while the older DSi was only about 2,000 units shy of the same figure. Meanwhile, the PSP Go was even lower than the Xbox 360, with the PS2 closing off the chart.

With New Super Mario Bros. Wii selling 934,739 copies in its first week, the battle for second place in the software chart was much closer with Phantasy Star Portable 2 from SEGA for the PlayStation Portable moving 286,896 units, while the third placed Kidou Senshi Gundam: Gundam vs. Gundam Next Plus from Namco Bandai for the same platform managed to sell 222,985.

Samuray Warriors 3 from KOEI for the Nintendo Wii conquered fourth place, with 121,182, and Professor Layton and the Diabolical Flute from Level 5 was, appropriately, in fifth place.
