Harsh words from the company

The console war is being waged on every front, ranging from arguments between the top three companies on which device has more features, which has the best games, or which is the most popular. Even though heated debates haven't appeared for quite some time, it seems that Sony wants to rekindle the war, through the voice of Peter Dille.

The Sony executive has recently talked with GamaSutra about the PlayStation 3 and about its competitors on the market, Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii. He went on to recycle an old statement made by Jack Tretton, which compared the three companies and their areas of expertise, while highlighting the important role that the PS3 had in entertainment.

“I don't want to steal CEO Jack Tretton's quote, but he's fond of saying: ‘Microsoft owns the office; Sony owns the living room; and Wii owns the closet.’ And that's an aggressive, probably quotable line. But the point he's trying to make is something that we find backed up in a lot of our research and focus groups: that people who are playing the Wii bring it out when friends come over and then put it back away — that the console that stays connected to the TV is a different system.”

While these are certainly some very tough words, the Wii is still selling more than the PS3 and the Xbox 360 combined, meaning that, while it might own the closet, it owns more wardrobes around the world than the offices and living rooms of the other two companies.

Hopefully, though, both Microsoft and Sony will find some ways to counter the popularity of the Wii and bring new features, which will make the users even more happy with their favorite video game console.
