It's no news that the kitchen has gained quite a lot of social and family prestige during the last years, especially as a lot of people, parents and children alike, are spending a lot of time in their kitchens when they're at home. Used for more than simply cooking, today's kitchens are, indeed, a social place where people relax, have a cup of coffee, stay when they pay visits to each other, smoke or have a sip. And even more, homework is sometimes made here, while other appliances such as TVs and radio sets are a common presence, as well.

But as cooking and other kitchen-based duties involve dirty or wet hands, finding some appliances to withstand this not-so-friendly environment for a long time is a difficult task. Or at least it used to be, as new gadgets like the DAB Radio from UK designer Anton Webb seem to have a solution for the problem.

Water and electronics usually don’t go well together. At the same time, all sorts of juices and other liquids dripping from your hands onto these electric appliances can be a major hazard as well. Now, thanks to design ideas like the DAB Radio, it looks like these issues have finally gotten a neat solving.

We're talking about a DAB radio unit that has been especially developed for the kitchen environment. One of the coolest things you'll instantly notice about it is its minimalist and Spartan design: a simple cylindrical form factor, carefully designed to be a pleasant presence on your kitchen's shelves or tabletops and requiring a minimal space to be installed. With a weighted base and rubberized ring around it, the contraption will surely stay in place very well, even if pushed by accident.

Large, touch-sensitive sensor buttons have been embedded directly in the wall of the DAB, so that you can adjust the volume while wearing kitchen gloves, or simply using your knuckles or even elbows. The DAB Radio also sports a very stylish display, in the body of a thin vertical black strip with colored lettering, giving you info on the station you're listening to or other useful data.

In the upper part of it, a colored cap gives further personality to your radio and that's even cooler, as you'll be able to match the coloring of your DAB to your kitchen's décor for a higher score on the style scale of your home. Atop it, a large On-Off button has been installed, and you can even turn you radio on or off using your chin or forehead, if needed. All the construction is splash- and Steam-proof, to make it last longer. The speaker is built-in and an 110/220 converter has been included in the very plug for even more convenience. All we can do now is just hope to see the DAB Radio in stores as soon as possible.

We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there. That's why we thought it would be a good idea to create an email address for you to help us a little in finding gadgets we missed. Interesting links are bound to be posted with recognition going mainly to those who submit. The address is .
