Moteiv Corporation, which is known as one of the leading wireless sensor network solutions providers, announced today, 8th of May, the release of Moteiv Tmote Mini, the latest member of its renamed Tmote product family.

What exactly is Tmote Mini? It?s a wireless sensor network node (a.k.a. "mote") packaged in a standard miniSDIO form factor and supporting the ZigBee specification. Due to the ultra-compact form factor, Tmote Mini?s "mote core" can be integrated into PDAs, cell phones and other mobile devices.

Nowadays, the demand for easy to use wireless sensor network (in short, WSN) technology has reached very high levels. Also, instant and direct access to physical data becomes more and more important in everyday life. A wide range of applications are using WSNs, applications in the healthcare, transportation, defense, agriculture/environmental or industry. Tmote Mini helps the growth of WSNs usage area by extending the number of platforms to support it.

Mareca Hatler, Director of Research and Senior Market Analyst with On World, declared: "One of the largest WSN headaches is gaining access to sensor data in the field and then making sense of it by accessing backend and middleware sensor services. Solutions are starting to emerge such as mobile gateways and mobile WSN development systems to address this growing opportunity."

The CEO of Moteiv Corporation, Rick Schell, said about Tmote Mini: "We are pleased to announce this latest addition to Moteiv's product family. Tmote Mini allows our customers to design wireless network solutions with greater in-field capability than ever before. This product was developed as a direct result of customer feedback and their demand to create applications that rely less on tethered IT infrastructure and more on mobile devices such as cell phones. Tmote Mini's widely known industry-standard miniSDIO form factor not only enables this critical mobile functionality, it also eases integration, reduces cost, and speeds time-to-market in deployments worldwide."

The "mote core" of Tmote Mini, for use in WSN applications, is a combination of a TI/Chipcon CC2420 low-power radio and a Texas Instruments MSP430 microcontroller. Two configurations are available for Tmote Mini: a standard module that has a 0 dBm (1mW) output power at 2.4 GHz, and the enhanced module, which has +20 dBm (100mW) output power at 2.4 GHz.

Tmote Mini is functionally equivalent to Tmote Sky, another successful module of Moteiv, hence applications can be easily migrated from Tmote Sky to the Tmote Mini deployment platform. Measuring only 20 mm x 25.4 mm and having a thickness of almost 2mm, the new module can be at any time integrated into a variety of products.
