The side ponytail is the latest "it" summer hair trend - from Lauren Conrad in "The Hills" to Stacy Kiebler and Hayden Panettiere on the red carpet, we've seen this youthful, extremely easy to achieve hair style sweep Hollywood's hottest ladies and we want to know more about exactly how it's done. After a bit of research we've put together a little list of basic how-tos and tips for achieving the perfect side ponytail look, and accessorizing it with colorful head bands to match your makeup or simply to add a splash of your own personality to a relaxed, natural-looking hair style.

Here are the basics. First of all, decide if you're going to want your hair straight or wavy in your pony tail. If you decide to go for the wavy 'do, get your styling flat iron at the ready. Start by back combing the hair at the back of your head, from the "crown" (the hair on the very top of your head) all the way to the areas behind both ears. Apply a little spray at the roots for some extra hold, and do a simple, off center part, then using the tips of a bristle brush gently sweep the longer locks to one side, below your ear. Secure them in place with an elastic and then curl the ends of your hair. If you're going out shopping for the day and want to add an extra attractive touch, add on a colorful head band and you're good to go.

If you're planning to wear the side ponytail 'do for an evening party, here's how you can add a little extra glamour. Dry your hair with a diffuser, apply a little bit of gel to styling smaller sections of the hair for better definition, then curl each strand using the styling iron. Add the extra volume using a back comb like mentioned before, but make the ponytail looser than the daytime 'do and allow for some tendrils to hang loosely on the side of your face opposite the ponytail. Sweep off the bangs to the same side as your ponytail and add a little spray for a better, more textured finish. Pair the wavy side ponytail with a Grecian-style dress and you'll be the queen of the evening, wherever you decide to go.
