If you remember Doodle Hex for the DS, then you are bound to get a "chimes" sound for the game's developer, Tragnarion. Now, the Spanish company is about to become popular with a lot more titles, as its upcoming project will work on far larger and more popular platforms like the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The Scourge Project is a third-person shooter powered by the Unreal Engine 3 and it promises a story co-op-driven experience.

With the Unreal Engine 3 fast at work, the game will obviously support the classical multiplayer mods of capturing the flag, the deathmatch, the team deathmatch and also a frontiers mode. Still, the title plans to make its mark through the co-op, and, as such, the developers have put a lot of work into the campaign. The Scourge Project will allow up to four players to fill in the boots of the sci-fi Echo Squad, an elite mercenary group hired to steal certain technology from the evil Nogari Corporation, because, of course, this is what good guys do, steal from other people that they've labeled as evil for having something they really want.

Each co-op member will assume the role of one of the squad's members and will experience a unique look at the story. The squad will become stranded on Nagari Island soon after insertion and will have to make its way through enemy forces, in a frantic and chaotic run to their objective. The game's director, Omar Salleh, is particularity excited about Tragnarion's project. "We're really excited about the upcoming release of The Scourge Project," he said. Who would have guessed, the excited-game director is excited.

He further added that, "The whole team has put a huge amount of love and effort into creating something special and we're all eager to see action gamers the world over having a blast with the gameplay and soaking up the breathtaking visuals and soundscapes. Our unique blend of co-op action plus co-op storytelling, in which each playable character has a distinct perspective on the central plot, brings something new to the table and we're definitely looking forward to expanding on this and much more in the rest of the Scourge Saga."

The game is planned as a growing series, so this first installment will encompass two episodes and four scenarios. The rest of the story will be developed as long as The Scourge Project proves to be a successful title. The title will become available for download through Steam later this month, while console gamers will get it in March 2010. If the game proves to be an Unreal 3 - Left 4 Dead mash-up with Echo Squad playing the survivors, but with a deeper storyline, things could be quite interesting.
