After months of speculation and a couple of weeks of intense anticipation, the royal baby is here. Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton went into labor yesterday and, in the afternoon, gave birth to a son.

Us Weekly cites a Palace statement saying that the boy, the future King of England, “weighed in at 8 pounds, 6 ounces [3.79 kg]” and was perfectly healthy.

Both mother and child are fine.

“We could not be happier,” Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, said in a brief statement released after the happy moment.

As tradition dictates, the announcement that the boy had been born was made in front of St Mary’s hospital, where Kate had been admitted hours before.

A letter went to the Palace informing everyone else but the closest relatives, who had already been told of the birth by Prince William.

Afterwards, royal crier Tony Appleton carried the note back to the hospital, where he read it out loud for the members of the press, gathered there for more than a week.

You can see the video of the announcement in the video below, embedded at the end of this article. It’s truly something else.

“The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry & families have been told and are delighted. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well and will remain in hospital overnight,” a statement from the Palace says.

Prince Charles, first-time granddad, also issued a statement on this historic occasion.

“Both my wife and I are overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild. It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy,” Prince Charles says.

“Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone's life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future,” he adds.
