Ceren Bagatar's invention could save countless lives

Clean drinking water is one of the major problems when disasters strike, whether we're thinking about earthquakes, war zones, or even worse, floods. Furthermore, there are a lot of areas on the planet where safe drinking water is more of a luxury than most of us might ever be able to imagine. Statistics show that thousands of people die every day because of infections caused by impure water or from insufficient hydration; and a very big part of these numbers is unfortunately represented by children. Turkish designer Ceren Bagatar has come with a very interesting device called the Rescue Bottle, trying to ease up the water problems in such parts of the world or in disaster scenarios.

Contaminated water cannot be used for drinking and neither for cooking, and simply boiling it will not get rid of dangerous impurities. At the same time, when it comes to filtering, it has been proved that little care is taken in perilous situations and the presence of water-related diseases is still at alarming rates.

The Rescue Bottle is a device that helps people who need to purify water and make it safe for drinking and cooking purposes. What's even more amazing is the fact that the Rescue Bottle can also be used with the very dirty water during floods and this can make a very serious difference between life and death among significant communities in the afflicted areas. This device relies on the reverse osmosis principle and special membranes that will retain all the impurities in the water, leaving the processed liquid clear and clean, as well as safe for drinking.

Another crucial feature of Ceren Bagatar's device is its capability to dissolve dioralytes in the filtered water and thus enhance the nourishing properties of the purified liquid. Dioralytes are substances (glucose, sodium chloride, potassium chloride and disodium hydrogen citrate) that are usually eliminated in cases of severe dehydration and which have to be quickly replaced in order to maintain a person healthy. Most of these substances, also known as electrolytes, are eliminated from the human body in cases of acute diarrhea and cholera, afflictions that are quite common in areas where clean drinking water is at short.

The Rescue Bottle can filter 500ml of water per charge; one dioralyte sachet can “treat” 15 charges of water, thus providing 7.5 liters of clean, safe and re-nourishing liquid. Here's how the Rescue Bottle works, as explained by the inventor: “The reverse osmosis membrane filters brackish water into pure water using the driving force of highly concentrated dioralyte solution. The concentrated solution refill is filled in with a highly concentrated solution of dioralyte mixed with basic nutrients that is enough to get 15 times of 500ml of mixed drink. The empty container is filled in with the mixture of pure water and dioralyte and used with a mouthpiece that enables multi-user usage in relief camps and other community areas. Rescue bottles can be used in flood relief camps, or given away to communities with multiple mouthpieces with a cost of between $20–50. They can also be stationed in the floodwater in areas where complete disaster management services cannot reach.”

We're really looking forward to see the Reascue Bottle in stores as soon as possible as such a contraption is a very useful tool for all those who really like to spend a lot of time in the great wide outdoors.
