“The Purge” was perhaps one of the biggest surprises of 2013, managing to climb atop the box office and even win over critics even though it was made on a small budget. Its success was proof of what good ol’-fashioned word of mouth can do.

So, when a sequel was announced shortly after, no one was really surprised because that’s become a tradition in Hollywood these days. However, people did imagine the follow-up would be worse than the original because, again, this happens on the regular in the industry.

However, the brand new trailer for “The Purge: Anarchy” seems to indicate that, if anything, the follow-up will be at least as good as the original. The action moves outside now, into the city, during the bloodiest night of the year when, by law, for 12 straight hours, all crime is legal.

This night, called the Purge, is the perfect occasion to vent frustrations, get revenge, indulge in your darkest and most perverted fantasies or, in the case of two of the new protagonists, fight to survive. The new trailer, the second so far, also introduces the character played by Frank Grillo, a man who uses the Purge to seek revenge.

It also includes one particular, quite disturbing scene, in which various people end up in a mock-charity function where, instead of bidding on dates or kisses, the rich bid on people dying gruesome deaths.

Visually speaking, the trailer is enough to get your hairs standing on end. Let’s just hope there’s some substance to all this style as well: “The Purge: Anarchy” will be released in June.
