As more and more experts start to move from the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) to attempting to message alien civilizations (METI), critics are arguing that its safer to limit ourselves to observations. These critics are more useful to characterizing them than alien races.

Since the dawn of time, the world has been thorn apart by a conflict between progress and stagnation, between those seeking to learn more despite risks, and those willing to settle with the status-quo.

Usually, people in the latter category are those who stand most to gain from the way things are set up. The fact that some people oppose attempts to contact alien civilizations reflects our species' mental youth, analysts say.

When experts recently sent more messages into deep space, many jumped in the air, criticizing the endeavor, saying that we put ourselves in a vulnerable position. However, it is more than reasonable to assume that alien races capable of interstellar travel are not primitive cultures.

As such, it's probable that they have a higher agenda than shooting everyone, or trying to harvest our resources as Stephen Hawking put it in recent statements. Proponents of Messaging to Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (METI) are convinced that advantages of contacting aliens outweigh the dangers.

There is also the issue of our emissions of radiation. For more than 50 years, we have bee putting all types of electromagnetic radiation into deep space, and alien races that may be listening would discover this in any case.

Rather than risk them seeing an episode of some stupid TV show, it stands to reason that it's better to send actual messages saying 'Hello,' Daily Galaxy reports. At the same time, we have no technology to hide our own emissions.

What this means is that, even if we would want to bury our heads in the sand, there would be no way for us to steer clear of detection even if we chose to do so. This is another reason to try and establish contacts ourselves, then simply waiting to be visited.

No one is saying that there isn't a chance potential alien races would be violent, or exploitative, but what METI proponents are arguing is that the chances of this being the case are very small.
