14 DAY TRIAL // While fuel cells have promised to deliver unlimited amounts of power without hurting the environment for quite some time now, not many companies have managed to deliver solutions based on this technology free of any drawbacks, but this hasn't stopped myFC from giving it a try with their PowerTrekk unit.
Compared to the other hydrogen fuel cell chargers available, myFC's PowerTrekk differentiates itself by the introduction of a 1600mAh lithium-ion battery.
This can act as a buffer between the fuel cell and the device in need of some juice or can be used for charging mobile phones and other gadgets when a fuel-pack is not available.
The PowerTrekk is rated at 5V and 1000mA and is compatible with a wide range of portable devices, which support USB charging that is, a USB-A output allowing for various adapters to be plugged-in into the device.
For recharging the internal battery, the unit uses a standard micro-USB port (5V, 500 mA).
“PowerTrekk has a competitive edge over traditional portable chargers. Fuel cell power is generated immediately and charging is not impacted by weather or the position of the sun, as for solar panels,” said Bjorn Westerholm, CEO at myFC.
“Compared to battery powered travel chargers, PowerTrekk offers reliable charging as the fuel packs do not deplete as batteries do,” continued the company's rep.
During the 2011 Mobile World Congress, which takes place right now in Barcelona, Spain, we had the chance to see the PowerTrekk live in action and we’re happy to report that everything seemed to work out OK.
From the company officials present at the expo, we managed to find out that the device should be available throughout Europe by the end of the year.
Sadly, pricing for the MyFC PowerTrekk fuel-cell charger has not been established yet.
