Hype building at its best

The PlayStation 3 hasn't really gotten off to a great start in the console war, as it failed to live up to the huge expectations that fans of the PS2 had all across the world. It didn't really stand a chance against the popular Wii and the Xbox 360 gained the edge over Sony's console by implementing a hefty price cut, thus attracting all of the cost-conscious customers out there.

However, Sony is very confident in its own product this year, and made sure that a lot of pretty interesting games would appear in order to make hardcore gamers choose the PS3 over the Wii and the Xbox 360. This claim is now backed up by Shuhei Yoshida, the president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, who says that a lot of titles will appear, oriented at almost any type of gamer out there.

“2009 will be the year of big, exclusive PS3 titles. Just to name a few, the year will start with the much anticipated launch of Killzone 2, followed by a fresh, new take on the superhero/anti-hero open sandbox genre inFamous, a mind-bending thriller Heavy Rain, a massive 256 player simultaneous online shooter MAG, an augmented reality, virtual pet in your room experience EyePet, and some more big titles that we have not even announced yet. On PSP, we have new titles and innovations that will connect and expand the PlayStation experiences.”

It really seems that the PS3 will have a bulky lineup for this year, but let's not forget that the high price is still keeping a lot of potential customers away from the Japanese console, or even worse, making them pick the lower-priced Xbox 360 or Wii, which, although they don't offer the same value, as Sony itself put it, are still selling quite well.

Let's hope that PlayStation users, be it PS3 or PSP, will see some interesting titles this year and they will be very pleased with their console choice.
