Advanced Micro Devices's graphics division, the formerly the independent computer hardware manufacturing company ATI, is not really know among the computer users as the most timing inclined and abiding outfit in the industry, but it looks like things are a little different right now as a number of sources are reporting that the preparations for the launch of the next generation of Radeon discrete graphics units are right on track.

AMD is set to launch the Radeon HD 2950 XT and XTX graphics processing units on the 15th of November and that means that if everything goes just fine, the green goblin company, Nvidia, will have two whole weeks to promote its GeForce 8800 GT graphics processing units virtually unopposed, as it is due to launch its own product on the 29th of October.

As the time frame is working in Nvidia's favor, AMD's product line will have to come up with some serious graphics performance results in order to gain some more market share and not become just another product on the low and medium level market segments. Codenamed by the designing and manufacturing company RV670XT, the new AMD graphics processing unit will power both the Radeon HD 2950 XT as well as the XTX versions and according to the news site fudzilla it will come with a default operating speed of 825MHz, while its direct competitor, the Nvidia GeForce 8800 Gt runs at only 600MHz.

As there is more to graphics performance these days than pure clock speed, it is impossible to say who will emerge victorious from this battle, even more so since the graphics cards that will integrate the two GPUs are not even remotely similar as they use different video memory quantities and different memory interfaces. One more thing would be that while the Nvidia product offering is not capable of handling the new Triple SLI setup, the Radeon HD 2950 line is perfectly capable of working on an odd number graphics card configuration.
