Blu-ray PlayStation 3 vs. HD DVD Xbox 360

It seems that Microsoft has finally decided to show its upcoming external HD DVD player, mentioning that it will be available in the last days of this summer or in autumn. The price wasn't revealed.

The software giant announced at the end of last year that it will be offering an optional external HD DVD drive for its Xbox 360 gaming console later in 2006. According to representatives of the company, nine out of ten Xbox 360 owners plan on buying an HDTV flat panel TV in the near future - which, the firm believes, creates an undeniable case for an HD DVD for the box.

During last year's CES Keynote, Microsoft's Peter Moore announced the device: "The new drive will offer millions of Xbox 360 owners the ability to easily enjoy HD DVD movies and will provide consumers with even more choices for experiencing high-definition content, in either physical or digital form."

However, Microsoft also has competitive reasons to offer such a drive to its customers - Sony is expected to ship its Playstation 3 in the same period with a Blu-ray disc drive as a standard feature.
