Recession leads to “crash couture”

Magic scarves, meaning pieces of cloth that can be worn almost as anything, including as a dress and headwear, have been around for quite some time, but they never seemed able to get on the fashion radar. Now, with the recession and women’s need to save up on clothes, it has finally made it on the center stage and, by the looks of it, it is here to stay.

Priced almost at 10 bucks, this is one piece that, manufacturers say, any woman, be her affected by the recession or not, should have in her wardrobe. The reason for that is simple, if we’re to lend an ear to what they have to say: the magic scarf is not only extremely useful in that we get to save a lot of money by buying it, but also practical to the utmost, being able to get us out of a tricky situation, like when we can’t find something good to wear and we’re pressed for time.

When used merely as a scarf, this “magic” item looks nothing different from its “counterparts,” being 66 inches long and 8 inches wide. The secret to making it wearable in hundreds of ways is to be found in the tubular shape of the scarf, as well as in the fact that it is made of ultra-stretchy fabric. Being stretchy also makes it easily fit any type of body, thus making the whole saying “one size to fit all” actually true.

Because of all the abovementioned qualities, the magic scarf can be worn as anything, from a simple scarf, to headwear, muffler, handmuff, poncho, and even skirt, strapless top, belt and dress. Whether women are really in that much dire need to save up money, at the cost of sometimes looking downright ridiculous is still to be determined.

However, the first fashion savvy voices to be heard seem to be pretty much against the magic scarf and everything that it entails. Of course we’re going through rough times, but that does not mean we should all turn to kitsch and let our fine taste be corrupted. Instead of choosing this multi-purpose, apparently wonderful scarf, we could tighten the belt and, at the same time, also continue to be as trendy and original as before, through other methods.

For instance, we could “customize an old dress by sewing on a strip of sequins; take up the hem of a dress to make a mini, stitch colored buttons to a sweater to jolly up the shoulders - cheaper, and a lot more stylish.” Deborah Arthurs writes for the Mail.
