14 DAY TRIAL // A short while ago, “The Mentalist” creator Bruno Heller promised fans that the series finale, which airs today, February 18, 2015 and comes after 7 seasons, would be a happy ending, one that would feel organic to the way the show had progressed and would offer satisfying closure.
He wasn’t lying: no happy ending is happier than a wedding. Photos released by CBS to Yahoo! TV show the two leads, FBI Agent Teresa Lisbon and FBI consultant Patrick Jane, on their wedding day, about to exchange vows. So now we really know how this show ends.
“Once the romance was born,” Heller says, “it seemed like it would be cheating the audience a little if we didn't take it to the consummation of that. The real, traditional happy ending.”
Former castmembers Owain Yeoman and Amanda Righetti will also be back for the final episode, which was shot back in December. Heller describes the finale as a big, happy family reunion, one that will be like a reward for all the loyal fans who stuck by the series through thick and thin.
He also says that, if the fans had paid attention to how the relationship between Lisbon and Jane changed through the years, they would have known that no other ending but this one with the wedding was possible, even though the plan wasn’t to bring them together when the show debuted in 2008.
Personally, I have to say that the season 6 finale with the romantic twist felt like a sell-out to me. The airplane scene felt true to the character of Jane and the way he’d been portrayed until then, but everything from then on didn’t. That includes the kiss and everything that followed after, so I’m not so sure about the wedding feeling organic to the story.
