Paul Thomas Anderson will soon be returning to the big screen after a long hiatus following his 2007 “There Will Be Blood.” A first trailer for “The Master,” starring Joaquin Phoenix, has been released.

The film is believed to have been inspired by the Church of Scientology, one of the most powerful cults of today.

It stars Philip Seymour Hoffman as the religious leader Lancaster Dodd, with Joaquin Phoenix playing his disciple, a former drifter.

The first trailer shows nothing of Hoffman in character but plenty of Phoenix being questioned by a figure of authority over a series of unspecified “incidents” he seems to have no recollection of.

It doesn't give away too much of the plot but it's artsy, weird and very, very intriguing. Joaquin Phoenix is officially back!

“The Master” also stars Amy Adams, Jesse Plemons and Laura Dern, and it will be out on October 12.
