The photos would be quite beautiful if the fires weren't so damaging

The California Rim Fire rages unchecked. The wildfire has been spreading for more than a week now with firefighters powerless to do much except try to keep it from affecting inhabited areas or the water and electricity supplies of nearby cities, including San Francisco.

Granted, the world, or even Californians, doesn't seem too concerned about it, as Miley Cyrus' twerking is far more interesting, but perhaps if they had the view that NASA astronaut Karen Nyberg has of the fire they'd have a different opinion.

Nyberg has posted new images of the wildfire, shot as the ISS was passing just above the flames. An earlier photo she posted gives another perspective and would be quite beautiful if the fires weren't so damaging.

NASA published some satellite imagery of the fires as well, providing a view into their progress over the past week.
