Dangers of the Internet

The internet is an extraordinary place, which offers countless possibilities for the user to gather information or communicate or simply hang out with his friends, but in the same time it can prove to be very dangerous, due to certain people whose intentions are far from being legal.

There are many cases when na?ve users, which are expecting to find, after clicking on a link, a database with more or less decent pictures of celebrities, manage to transform their computer in a launch pad for online attacks.

According to the experts, thousands of computers are joining, on a weekly basis, the already huge army of remote-controlled computers (also known as zombie systems), used in different purposes by their "masters".

Thus, these computers can be used for generating denial-of-service-type attacks, which have the purpose of blocking the access to certain sites, transmitting huge quantities of spam or even, in certain situations, stealing confidential information, as for example passwords for bank accounts or Social Security numbers.

The ironic part is that in most cases, the persons involved in such activities don't do it for huge amounts of money, They're quite happy with what their "employer" has to offer, even if it's just a few dollars, a pair of sneakers or a chocolate bar.
