The PS3 exclusive is still on track for a release sometime next year

The fate of The Last Guardian, the action adventure title coming from Sony’s Team Ico studio, seemingly took a turn for the worse yesterday, as GameStop sent out an automated message telling those who pre-ordered the game that it was canceled, while eliminating it from the retail system of its actual stores, fact which Sony says is completely untrue. The Last Guardian has been in development for quite some time with many PlayStation 3 owners eagerly awaiting this new game from Sony’s Team Ico, the studio responsible for cult classics like Ico or Shadow of the Colossus, which appeared for the PlayStation 2 many years ago and were remastered recently for the PS3 in high definition.

Things got a bit awkward recently, as Fumito Ueda, the boss of Team Ico, left his official position but is still working on the game.

Now, fans who pre-ordered the title from GameStop were treated with a shocking message, in which the store chain said that The Last Guardian has been canceled. People who phoned their local stores found out that the game was even deleted from internal software, so it really seemed like the game was completely scrapped.

Sony immediately released a couple of statements, however, denying the cancelation of The Last Guardian. The company’s director of corporate communications, Patrick Seybold, told Kotaku a firm “this is not true,” while Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida also denied it through his Twitter account.

GameStop realized this mistake quickly, however, and sent out a statement, saying that it only took the decision to remove The Last Guardian from its internal system until the game gets a concrete release date.

"The Last Guardian has not been cancelled by Sony as we incorrectly stated in an automated call to reservation customers. Because the game did not have a specific release date, GameStop made the decision to remove the game from our system. The Last Guardian will be reinstated for pre-order when a firm launch date is known."

As such, it seems that The Last Guardian’s fate isn’t in any danger, although a concrete release date still isn’t known, so PS3 owners will have to wait and see when it will actually appear for their platform.
