A survey published by Pew Internet & American Life Project says that the Internet is the most popular method of communication and research for teens, nine out of ten, with ages ranging from 12 to 17, having access to the Internet. This situation applies to the US only, and this evolution is impressive considering that five year ago, the ratio of teenagers with Internet access was 3/4.

Although the Internet is also more popular among adults, only 66% use the web for personal use or at work.

According to the same study, young people perceive the Internet as a simple communication and research tool, not as a complex technology.

The survey was carried out at the end of 2004 with the help of 1,100 teens, who were contacted by phone. Among the surveyed teenagers, almost half of them access the Web daily, compared to the 42% recorded 5 years ago. Three quarters of the surveyed teenagers use the chat to communicate with friends, while e-mail messages are the adults' domain.
