Sometimes trying too hard doesn’t pay off – and these stars know it now

A red carpet rolled out at the entrance of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City was the hottest spot to keep an eye on the other night, as the MET Gala 2012 took place. Below are some of the looks that didn't stand a chance to make it on the Best Dressed list.

As we also noted a few hours ago, the MET ball is nothing short of the Oscars of fashion – i.e. the place to be if stars, be they singers, actors or models, consider themselves fashion savvy or fashion forward.

However, sometimes, trying too hard doesn't pay off, and some of the celebrities you'll read about here are said to have hit the mark in their honest efforts of making a splash on the red carpet.

Besides them, fashion gurus also include here Beyonce, Chloe Sevigny and Rooney Mara, whose outfits we talked about yesterday, noting that they stirred mixed reactions in people.

There is nothing mixed about the reaction to Elizabeth Banks' odd gown. Designed by Mary Katrantzou, it was so cacophonous and loud that the actress herself seemed aware of it, as she posed on the red carpet.

Not only did it have countless different patterns on it, but it also strove to combine them with a rounded capelet with a peplum and a high slit, none of which worked.

Banks has tried unlikely outfits on the red carpet before and she always managed to pull off – but this wasn't one of them.

Kristen Stewart, star of “The Twilight Saga,” also made an appearance on the red carpet and, just like Banks, came up short in the fashion stakes.

Though most comfy in skinny jeans, a tee and dirty sneakers, the young star rocked a Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquière dress, which would have looked quite awesome on her incredible figure had it strove for more simplicity.

Fashion watchers agree KStew would have gotten an A+ for execution if her dress went either just color blocking or just for animal prints, not the two combined. This way, she gets an A for effort.

Fans of Florence + The Machine must already know that Florence Welch, the singer in the band, is not exactly known for being un-quirky. As such, it feels rather wrong to include her in this list.

Critics agree that she looked like a very delicate and heavily adorned inverted lampshade in her odd Alexander McQueen gown, though she gets point for her simple 'do and makeup.

Up next is Sports Illustrated model Kate Upton, who has both a body and a face to die for, and who managed to ruin both for the red carpet ceremony.

Kate opted for a metallic dress by Michael Kors which did nothing for her voluptuous figure and, perhaps even worse, for a tight bun, dark brows and red lips. On someone with a bonier structure, this could have probably worked.

Milla Jovovich and Marc Jacobs, yet another two famous fashion people, also missed the mark with their outfits on the red carpet.

While the model and actress opted for a Prada dress that did nothing for her figure, the designer shocked in see-through black lace and white underwear.

Kirsten Dunst, M.I.A. and Mary Kate Olsen are other examples of how bad fashion can happen to the best and most fashion savvy people.

All three are known for their unique style, which combines the most daring and modern elements with vintage ones but, at the MET Gala, they disappointed.

Kirsten looked matronly and overwhelmed in a Rodarte ensemble, M.I.A. looked out of place in a floral print ensemble (designer unknown), while Mary Kate looked old and rather haggard in a black sack.

Last but not least, we include in this list Tom Brady's hair, dubbed online a “pompa-hawk (half pompadour, half mohawk).”
