Backing-up on hard-drives has become a trendy thing nowadays. Of course it's useful, but people are starting to talk about it as if it's such an amazing creation, given to humans by God himself. Sure you can burn DVDs, but why not use hundreds of gigs of hard drive space for your precious data?

Well, in support of that idea, Newer Technology is making a bold step in this direction with the release of the Guardian MAXimus, the "first low-cost FireWire and USB2 External RAID 1 Storage Solution for consumers and professional users alike". As the press release says, the Guardian MAXimus is an external storage solution that works with any computer that has a FireWire 400, FireWire 800, or USB2 interface. It provides "live activity" backup/data redundancy via RAID 1 hardware mirroring, so that in the unlikely event of a hard drive failure, its uninterrupted full data accessibility RAID-1 redundancy will ensure that there is no data loss. Convenient front panel LEDs display drive access and status information.

Okay, I'll admit it. The RAID 1 thing coupled with the FireWire/USB Plug'n'Play easy configuration is more than appealing.

The RAID 1 hardware mirroring will let you sleep tight in case one hard drive fails during the file transfer. It also protects users from costly system downtime and data restoring after a hard drive system crash.

Regarding capacities, the Guardian MAXimus goes up to 1 terrabyte, which means that there are two monstrous 1TB hard drives inside the casing working "hard" to keep your data safe. Other capacities include 250GB, 400GB, 500GB and 750GB, all of these having 32MB buffers. The 1TB version comes with a 64MB buffer. There's also a 150GB solution, but at 10,000 RPM. Oh, I forgot: the drives are SATA.

Prices for the Guardian MAXimus range from $320 for the 250GB to around $800 for the 1TB solution.
