Each year, The Costume Institute Gala Benefit, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, is like the Oscars of fashion. Last night’s gala and red carpet ceremony was no exception, with the best of the best coming out to honor late designer and enfant terrible Alexander McQueen.

Dubbed “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty,” the Gala was held on Monday night, May 2 – and the red carpet marked a must-see for all fashion and celebrity lovers.

Though the moment the red carpet ceremony at the exclusive event was over, fashion gurus were quick to name the worst dressed stars of the evening, we’ll not do that, choosing instead to focus on some of the most glamorous outfits.

Useless to say, there were countless celebrities in attendance, and most of them were more than happy to pose for pictures on the red carpet.

Kate Hudson, for instance, who just recently announced her engagement to rocker boyfriend Matthew Bellamy and who is now expecting her second child, looked stunning in a Grecian gown by Stella McCartney, matched with an Edie Parker handbag and lots of diamonds.

Actress Jessica Alba, who is also pregnant with her second child, went for an aerial design as well, with crystal accents: a Ralph Lauren Collection custom platinum strapless gown, accessorized with a Ralph Lauren Vintage Collection 1920s necklace.

For a change, she chose to wear the necklace in her hair, which only added more to her goddess look.

Gwyneth Paltrow was also a sparkly vision, though she chose a more body hugging design, also by Stella McCartney – with a slit that went up to her thigh.

With legs like hers, no one can really blame her. She accessorized with Fred Leighton jewels, and wore her hair loose.

Christina Ricci was the exact opposite of all the above, going for a design that would have probably made Morticia of the Adams Family proud, but which worked wonderfully with her petite and toned figure.

She accessorized with jewelry by Fred Leighton, and walked the red carpet and posed for pictures with designer Zac Posen.

Madonna too struck a different note, in her star-studded Stella McCartney long gown, which made the best of her toned figure and full bust.

To the blue gown, the singer added an extra touch of femininity with soft curls, lots of diamonds by Cartier and Sergio Rossi pumps.

Also in top shape was Renee Zellweger, who made sure she showed off her incredible figure in a backless Carolina Herrera gold embroidered gown, which hung so heavy on her body she didn’t even wear jewelry to go with it.

A longtime friend of the late designer Alexander McQueen, “SATC” star Sarah Jessica Parker paid him the ultimate tribute when she walked down the red carpet in a sparkly, body hugging McQueen creation.

The actress matched it with Fred Leighton earrings, ring, and brooch, and a very conservative but quite stunning hairdo.

Rihanna, on the other hand, was anything but conservative: never the one to shy away from showing off her amazing body, she opted for a Stella McCartney black lace gown that left very little to the imagination.

She also wore Wilfredo Rosado jewels and had her hair braided to one side, coming to mark a powerful contrast to the daring dress.

Victoria’s Secret Angel Miranda Kerr, new proud mommy and wife to Orlando Bloom, beamed on the red carpet in a ballerina-inspired Marchesa dress.

The model accessorized the strapless dress with the silk overlay with chunkier lace platform sandals by Nicholas Kirkwood.

Perhaps to prove nay-sayers that she was the wrong choice for a Chanel girl, “Gossip Girl” Blake Lively looked positively stunning in – what else? – a dress from the Chanel Fall/Winter 2009/10 Haute Couture Collection.

Furthermore, she walked on the red carpet hand in hand with the man himself, designer Karl Lagerfeld, who is the one who chose her to be the new face of Chanel.

Last but not least, American Idol judge Jennifer Lopez sparkled in a fuchsia Gucci gown, with feathery shoulders and plenty of jewelry.
