This August, another best-selling young-adult novel will be getting the big screen treatment: Lois Lowry’s “The Giver.” A first trailer for it has been released online and is embedded in full above.

Aside from the interesting idea, that of a post-apocalyptic dystopian society that hides a very dark and dangerous secret, “The Giver” also has another strong thing going for it: a very strong cast.

As you can see from the trailer, it stars Meryl Streep, Jeff Bridges, Brenton Thwaites, Alexander Skarsgard, Katie Holmes, and even pop country singer Taylor Swift, but she didn’t make the cut for the first preview.

“The Giver” is set in a “perfect” society, in which all illness and all wrong has been eradicated. Sure, it’s not even remotely fun, but fun is not a high price to pay for the absence of disease and crime, is it?

Each person in this world is given a life assignment and, when Jonas’ turn comes, he is picked to be the Receiver of Memories, the only person to whom The Giver passes on the actual facts about the past, the truth.

So, as it turns out, the “perfect” world isn’t all that perfect after all. “The Giver” will be released on August 15.
