The new consumer-friendly printer wants to make recycling fun

We all love having a refreshing Coke now and then, even if we know it’s bad for our health. What's even more, the product will not only end up harming our bodies, but the leftover bottles will end up harming the environment.

But what if we told you that you could use the remaining empty bottles (provided they were made of plastic and not glass) to create anything you could imagine?

This scenario will be possible using the 3DSystem Ekocycle Cube 3D Printer, which uses a special kind of filament that blends recycled plastic bottle material, in order to 3D print the objects of you heart. For example, you could 3D print yourself a case for your smartphone.

For the time being, the color palette for the recycled filament to be used with the printer includes red, black, white and natural, but more will be added to the mix soon.

The Ekocycle printer will arrive on the market for $1,200 / €877 a pop and will use filament cartridges produced by using at least three recycled 20 oz / 591 ml PET plastic bottles. The resulted material will be flexible and durable, as any other 3D printer filament.

The company’s Chief Creative Officer is none other than the Blacked Eyed Pease, Will.i.am, an artist who has a deep passion for technology. Remember that a while back I told you he launched one of the first smartwatches to come with phone calling capabilities.
