It makes people notice it

A lot of video games are scheduled to appear this fall, from certain-to-sell sequels like Modern Warfare 2 or Uncharted 2, to extremely interesting new projects, like Brutal Legend. But one new property that stands out from the rest is Gearbox's Bordelands.

Even though the game promises to take players on a fun and interesting trip in a war-torn land of war, the most interesting fact about it is its fresh, cel-shaded art style, which gives it a completely new face and definitely makes people notice it.

This is just the fact on which the developers have placed their bets, testimony to this being the surprising amount of people that played the demo at this year's E3. Speaking about the new-found popularity of the game, Gearbox's Mikey Neumann revealed the following:

“I think it stems out of a lot of stuff. We did that trailer, the E3 trailer, just before E3, and I think the art style is instantly grabbing. I think the art style is absolutely perfect at drawing people in, and then from there it's do they like what they see? The art style helped us embrace a little zanier, a little kookier side of ourselves.”

“There's not a lot of E3 demos you can go to where midgets get lit on fire and their face melts off. And yet, it feels totally natural in our world. I think people really respond to that sorta... wackiness. The fighting is hardcore, it's actually real combat. You're shooting stuff, and it's dangerous and it can kill you, but we're not taking ourselves too seriously. In the land of people taking themselves way too seriously, I think it comes as a fresh air.”

Borderlands is definitely looking great, and, with the promise of such interesting gameplay and overall crazyness, it will certainly attract a lot of people who are searching for new experiences instead of the same sequels to already established franchises.
