Three older Doom titles already have homebrewed DS versions

Another First Person Shooter for the DS! Thankfully Doom was let loose on the net since the good Metroid Prime Hunters is starting to get old. Every once in a while the homebrew scene releases some daring feats of politically incorrect virtual thievery that fans everywhere can enjoy for free. DSDoom is a homebrewed port of the PC Doom to the Nintendo DS. Seeing that Id Software has no intentions of porting Doom, one of their main franchises, unto any of the consoles available, this effort is widely appreciated by the fan base. Such behavior is shunned by the professional developer circles though.

Doom ports into Nintendo consoles are known as far as the days of Gameboy Advance. "The Chuckster" and "WinterMute", the modders behind the DS versions, based their build off the Prboom source tree because of its "purity and portability". The implementation does not support touch screen controls but has the added benefit of WiFi connectivity in multiplayer. The two wish to incorporate touch screen controls and music support into their future plans.

Meanwhile, you'll have to settle for playing Doom, Doom II, and Ultimate Doom at very smooth frame rates. Doom had that locked horizontal mouse view so it isn't so bad to play without the touch pad. After all, who needs touch screen when we have WiFi deathmatch? Maybe legit DS developers should aim for FPS games more often, seeing what the homebrew scene can do with the hardware.
