Ivory tower, the game developer working on the upcoming The Crew, says that his team is creating one of the biggest game worlds ever seen by players or the industry because it wants gamers to always have a feeling of freedom.

Julian Garrity, the creative director, says that The Crew is designed to allow players to race from New York to Los Angeles if they want to, even if that trek might require them to put some time away.

He states, “The drive from New York to Los Angeles takes about an hour and a half in a good car, driving along the streets. If you go off road, it will take about two and a half hours.”

The Crew never forces players to choose one vehicle or one strategy and every group of gamers is free to create their own goals and rivalries while they explore the game world.

Garrity adds, “To give you a sense of size comparison for the cities, and the complexity of the cities, the in-game version of New York City is about the same size as Grand Theft Auto’s Liberty City.”

The Crew is part of the Ubisoft line-up of new intellectual property for next-gen consoles, which also includes The Division, a post-apocalyptic experience.

The title is being created by a new team with plenty of experience when it comes to racing and the overall concept is designed to appeal both to those who want an open world game and to those who like quick, focused races.

Customization is another big part of the game and Ubisoft has already said that it plans to support the experience in the long term with special events.

The Crew will be launched on the PC, the PlayStation 4 from Sony and the Xbox One at some point in early 2014.
