Summer is almost here, and by now most of us have a pretty good idea about the various trends and styles that made us ladies take a deep breath and part with our hard-earned money. The time has come to look ahead a little bit and start examining the various trends that will shape the look of our fall and winter shoe cabinets. When time will come to put our flats and sandals away, what will the trendiest options be for us? What heel and toe shapes and styles, what colors, materials and details to look for? Here is a quick guide to some of the fall trends and styles, just to give us something to consider while we wait for the heat to go away.

1. Toes

Designers have just three words for you: square toed shoes. However, as with every old(er) trend that gets to be resuscitated and reinvented, there's a twist - which means that we're dealing with a new, revolutionary squared-off shape that blends a tapered in toe with a short blunt nose, says Tania Braukamper, fashion advisor for a trends and styles website. Another, rather more uncomfortable option are the pointed toe shoes, also a big hit in the upcoming cold season. If your feet can't stand them, go for the square toed version, as they're marginally more comfortable.

2. Heels

Three heel shapes will rule the shoe world in the coming cold season: the stiletto, the chunky heels and the tapered heels. The stilettos were never quite completely out of fashion, of course, but now they're back in a hybrid form, a combination of platform shoe and stiletto, to be more precise, with a platform camouflaged in the front part and a vertiginous heel at the back. Stilettos are the ultimate trendy shoes, and it's needless to add that the higher they are, the better - something your feet will definitely not appreciate. The chunky heel shoes are another possibility, and they come with the added benefit of being easier to walk in. Finally, the tapered heels - the ones that start thick at the top and taper down into a point at the bottom - are the trendiest, more modern type of heel and they'll be around for a few more seasons after the coming fall one, which makes them a wise investment.

3. Colors

There's no need to feel guilty about adding as much color to your shoes as possible, as long as it's all tasteful and it matches your clothes. Don't labor under the delusion that vividly colored shoes can only be worn with a plain outfit, because it's just not the case. Stylists say that we're pretty much free to express our own creativity when it comes to opting for one combination of colors or another. Classic tones of brown, gray and black coexist with shoes colored in the boldest, brightest shades of red, purple or green.
