“The Butterfly Effect,” starring Ashton Kutcher and Amy Smart, came out in 2004 and, despite being panned by critics, made a huge profit. It’s now being rebooted, Slash Film reports.

Benderspink and Film Engine, together with the producers Anthony Rhulen, A.J. Dix, Chris Bender, JC Spin and writer Eric Bress, are on board for the new film.

Bress directed the original but, for the time being, no director for the reboot has been announced.

As noted above, the film was not received warmly by critics but having made lots of money is enough to warrant a new one.

“The 2004 film grossed $96 million [€72.9 million] worldwide when it opened, and cost just $13 million [€9.7 million] to make. It was popular enough to inspire a couple of direct-to-DVD sequels, which hit shelves in 2006 and 2009,” Slash Film writes.

“The Butterfly Effect” tells the story of a young man who, after a series of tragic occurrences, sees his life turned upside down. He discovers an ability to go back in time and change the past, which he doesn’t hesitate to do in the hope of “fixing it.”

However, as the trailer above proves and the tagline of the film says, if you “change one thing, [you] change everything.”
