Models on the catwalk have been proudly showing their sculpted tummies ever since collections launched as early as November 2008, but, until not long ago, the trend has failed to catch on with regular women. This will soon change, though, as stylists and fashion magazines are telling us that the bare midriff look will be making a splashing return in the spring and summer of 2009, according to the PopSugar e-zine.

Back in the ‘80s, pairing high-waisted jeans with a cropped tee was seen as the epitome of trendiness, despite the fact that it was something not all women could – or wanted to – do. The trend is making a strong comeback this year, but the options are richer this time around, so as to include ladies whose abs are not ripped or those who, for one reason or another, find going out in public with their tummy exposed a bit more than they can handle.

As fashion designers have shown us in their most recent collections, for starters, the bare midriff look is no longer restricted only to casual wear. As a matter of fact, it can also work for the office style, the only mention that must be made here being that it won’t be so much of a really “bare” midriff. Multi-layered, see-through tops (but only in the lower part), matched with vaporous skirts with a dash of the exotic and summery will be the items that will cause quite a stir in the upcoming season, stylists are sharing.

For those of us looking for more casual, ‘80s-style of cropped tops, choosing from the many options available should be the only problem. Revealing tops (either tees, tank tops or asymmetric, floaty ones) can already be found at major retailers and are selling like hot cakes.

Pair them with skinny jeans with a low waist, if your figure allows for it, and you’re ready to hit the clubs, fashion magazines point out. Then again, if exposing your belly button in public is not quite your idea of fun, or if you have a few extra pounds that you want to hide but are still burning to try this look, then a high-waist pair of jeans or a high-waist skirt should be just perfect.

What’s good about this trend is that, now, it’s definitely more flexible than it was back in the hey-day, making room for both trendiness but also class. As always, experimenting with different styles from the many available is highly recommended, so that you find just the one that suits you perfectly, stylists also advise.
