For the first time ever, characters from the ever-popular Marvel universe will be sharing the same screen in an effort on behalf of two different studios. Sony Pictures and 20th Century Fox are the studios in question, and the film in which this will happen will be “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.”

Starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, this second installment in the rebooted franchise from Sony will arrive in theaters on May 2. The end credits of the film will include a scene from the upcoming “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” which is from 20th Century Fox, The Wrap confirms.

However, fans should probably not get their hopes too high about what this could mean. For the time being, it’s not exactly a crossover, in the sense that the Spider-Man characters won’t mix with the Mutants from X-Men.

Still, the inclusion of a scene from a different franchise in a Spider-Man film could mean that a crossover is desired by both studios. If you look at what Marvel and Disney have been doing with The Avengers universe and how they linked all movies (with Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America) through the Easter eggs included after the end credits, this is definitely the logical conclusion.

Or it could be just a promo stunt, like the trailers that run before a movie, only done a bit differently. If a crossover is to happen, we won’t know for another few years, but all the right signs are already there.

“The studios have made previous attempts to merge their brands in the past. Most notable, there were discussions to include the Oscorp building, a key landmark from the Spider-Man series, into the New York skyline for ‘The Avengers.’ Unfortunately, nothing came to pass,” The Wrap says.

As for the scene in question, the same media outlet describes it as follows: “The end-credits sting features Jennifer Lawrence reprising the role of Mystique, opposite her ‘X-Men: First Class’ co-star Lucas Still and ‘X-Men’ newcomers Evan Jonigkeit and Josh Helman. Mystique engages a group of military men and gets to show off her trademark fighting skills.”

While “Amazing Spider-Man 2” is out at the beginning of next month, “Days of Future Past” will open later on, on May 23. Hype online is greater around the latter film than around “Spider-Man,” so one could argue that a crossover would, at this point at least, benefit Sony more.
