But not courtesy of AMD

Strange things have always happened in AMD's backyard but something seems to have really gone wrong since they acquired Ati. I mean c'mon people, you should have known better than to lie people about the availability of UVD hardware when it wasn't actually present (at least in current HD 2900 XT versions).

As I've said, things started to take a nasty turn from the moment AMD bought Ati. Starting with the endless delays and ending with the so INTEL-like "unofficial" unveiling of products before they were actually available, a lot of crazy stuff has happened at AMD lately. And as it turns out, a new bomb is set to explode as soon as possible.

Because a Canadian retailer has already started pre-orders for an 1GB GDDR4 Ati HD 2900 XT product. And although according to AMD this product will only be available next month (that is if they manage to keep their promise so I wouldn't bet my money on that) this announcement is really strange.

Moreover, the site has also some additional info on their product. Although earlier reports suggested that the 1GB HD 2900 XT will have the GPU clocked at 742MHz and the GDDR4 chips clocked at 2050MHz DDR, the Canadian site comes with an even more impressive setup. 825MHz for the core and 2100 for the memory seems enough to put this card in the same performance line with the 8800 GTX (if not the Ultra).

Evidently the price has also gone up from the $450 MSRP (for the 512MB GDDR3 HD) to a more "reasonable" $650. I wonder if that's true because if it is, then AMD may find salvation at last. Now I don't know if that's enough to beat the mighty Ultra but something is definitely better than nothing. In this case.
