Developer Re-Logic has revealed more information about the upcoming Terraria: Otherworld, showing off new gameplay footage in a neat little trailer.

The studio announced Terraria: Otherworld last month, but it didn't go into details back then. Now, it reveals that the game will add several strategy and role-playing dimensions to the popular pixel art sandbox builder, instilling the experience with a greater sense of purpose.

One of the things that turn many people off from these games is the fact that you're pretty much lost unless you have a specific thing in mind, which is usually building something for no reason other than self-fulfillment.

Terraria: Otherworld will be set in an alternate dimension within the same pixelated universe, throwing players into a harrowing battle against the world. You will be able to employ a wide array of weapons, magic, and defenses while taking on an ancient, unseen evil.

Otherworld will greatly expand the experience

Of course, Terraria: Otherworld will still maintain the open-world and open-ended approach of the original game, but will also add certain leveling requirements and non-linear story elements, skill trees and whatever else is needed for an epic adventure.

A new post on the Terraria forums outlines some of the team's goals with the game and provides examples of how the game will be given a sense of purpose, and what strategy and role-playing elements fans of the original should expect.

The overall goal of players is not simply to explore and build stuff, but instead to restore the world to its original, pristine state, which is achieved by pushing back the Corruption that has overtaken it.

For the time being, Terraria: Otherworld has a pretty vague "sometime during 2015" release window. Furthermore, the team states that it doesn't plan to launch the game in Early Access, but instead its goal is to launch the full experience, which will be expanded post-launch.

The team is going to release the game for Windows PC and Mac OS X and is also eyeing the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One home consoles.
